What Is Reflexology and Nervous system focused bodywork?

Reflexology is a structured form of therapeutic footwork that uses specific pressure techniques applied to the feet — the ears, hands, and face can also be worked— The main aim being to create homeostasis within the body to encourage it to function in harmony with itself. Reflexology is based on the traditional principle that the body is reflected in mapped zones across the feet, hands, ears and face and that applying specific pressure techniques to these areas may have a corresponding effect elsewhere in the body. Modern perspectives also consider the role of the nervous system in explaining its effects.

Traditionally, reflexology has been shown using “maps” of the body reflected in the feet. My understanding places greater emphasis on how intentional touch influences the nervous system, circulation and muscular tension. Rather than just targeting specific organs, reflexology can be understood as a way of working with the body as an interconnected system.

‘Nervous system focused bodywork’ is a broader term that I use, which encompasses reflexology, facial reflex techniques, and upper-body work. It refers to slow, skilled, intentional contact that I provide, designed to:

  • Calm the autonomic nervous system
  • Reduce protective muscle guarding
  • Improve local circulation
  • Support lymphatic movement
  • Encourage deep relaxation

When the nervous system shifts from a stress-dominant state to a parasympathetic (rest and recovery) state, many people notice improvements in how they experience tension, discomfort, sleep, and overall well-being.

While these treatments do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, they can play a valuable supportive role in helping the body regulate more effectively in a demanding world.

In essence, this work is about creating the conditions in which your body can rest, soften and reset.
